TRIPOLI, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- EU's top diplomat stressed the bloc's support for the stability and peace in Libya during his visit to this country on Wednesday.

Josep Borrell, vice president of the European Commission and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, met with Libyan Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush, President of the Presidency Council Mohamed Menfi, Deputy Prime Minister Musa al-Koni and UN Special Envoy for Libya Jan Kubis in Tripoli, the EU Delegation to Libya said in a statement.

Borrell commended the significant progress made in Libya over the past year, during which a cease-fire was established, political institutions were unified and a roadmap for the elections was built.

He also reiterated the EU's commitment to continue supporting the Libyan authorities to approve the necessary legislation and make concrete preparations for the upcoming elections in Libya, the statement added.

The UN-sponsored Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) a few months ago selected a new executive authority of a unity government and a presidency council, ending years of political division in the country.

The new executive authority's main task is to prepare for the general elections to be held on Dec. 24, as approved by the LPDF.

The European official also confirmed that EU is willing to share its experience to support partners in rebuilding state structures and helping strengthen their institutions. Enditem
