Hainan sweeps surfing golds at China's National Games

HAIKOU, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Qiu Zhuo and Huang Yingying from Hainan Province won the men's and women's surfing events respectively at China's 14th National Games on Saturday.

In the men's gold medal match, Qiu scored 12.33 points to beat his teammate Huang Yige, who earned 9.10 points.

"I was very happy to win, the waves in the final suited me. My opponent played very well today, his performance inspired me to play innovative surfing moves," said Qiu after his victory.

Huang won the women's final with 12.34 points, while Henan's Wang Xueyin placed second with 10.64 points.

"I am very excited to win the championship in my hometown," said Huang. "I played to my normal level in the final. Compared to the heats, the waves were bigger and more challenging and gave me more advantages to play."

Surfing debuted in the China's National Games, featuring a total of 50 athletes from 13 teams.

It was held in Wanning, a coastal city in the east of Hainan, which has 109 kilometers of coastline with the highest wave in Riyue Bay up to three meters. Enditem
