S.Korea's trade surplus of intellectual property rights hits record high in H1

SEOUL, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's trade surplus of intellectual property rights hit a fresh record high in the first half of this year due to an improved trade in the culture and arts copyrights, central bank data showed Friday.

Trade in intellectual property rights reached a record surplus of 850 million U.S. dollars in the January-June period, turning into the black from a deficit of 760 billion dollars tallied a year earlier, according to the Bank of Korea.

Surplus in trade of copyrights hit a new high of 1.96 billion dollars in the first half on higher copyright export both in the arts and software sectors.

Trade surplus in the culture and arts copyrights and the research and development and software copyrights reached record highs of 0.3 billion dollars and 1.66 billion dollars, respectively.

Trade in industrial property rights, including patents, logged a deficit of 1.37 billion dollars in the first half.

Trade in the patent and utility model rights posted a deficit of 940 million dollars in the six-month period, with the trade deficit in the trademark and franchise rights amounting to 480 million dollars.

By industry, manufacturers tallied a surplus of 1.09 billion dollars in the intellectual property rights trade, while the services companies recorded a deficit of 190 million dollars in the first half of the year. Enditem
