SANTIAGO, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chile's COVID-19 positivity rate dropped back down to around one percent, registering 1.08 percent in the past day, the Health Ministry said on Monday.

The positivity rate in the Santiago Metropolitan Region registered one percent, while in the country's 16 regions it was less or equal to one percent, the ministry said in a statement.

In the last 24 hours, the South American country recorded 640 new cases of COVID-19 infection and five more deaths, for a cumulative total of 1,652,364 cases and 37,445 deaths since the onset of the pandemic.

Chile's positivity rate dipped after 852 new cases of infection were detected on Friday, the highest daily figure in more than a month.

The Chilean government said a spike in the number of infections was expected following Independence Day celebrations on Sept. 18, when social distancing measures for gatherings and indoor seating capacity were relaxed. Enditem
