TEHRAN, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Iran reported on Wednesday 12,298 new COVID-19 cases, raising the country's total infections to 5,742,083.

According to an official briefing published by the Iranian health ministry, the pandemic has claimed 123,275 lives in the country so far, after 194 new deaths were registered in the past 24 hours.

A total of 5,264,775 people have recovered from the disease or been discharged from hospitals across the country, while 5,026 remain in intensive care units, the ministry said on its official website.

By Wednesday, 46,809,100 Iranians have received their first doses of COVID-19 vaccines, and 21,548,207 have taken two jabs.

A total of 33,563,390 COVID-19 tests have so far been carried out across the country.

As Iran is recovering from the fifth and also the most lethal COVID-19 surge since the beginning of the pandemic, health authorities have warned in recent days about the possibility of a sixth wave if health protocols are not observed or the vaccination process slows down. Enditem
