TEGUCIGALPA, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Veteran Colombian manager Hernan Gomez has been appointed head coach of Honduras as the Central American nation seeks to salvage its faltering 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign.
The 65-year-old replaces Uruguayan Fabian Coito, who was sacked after a 2-0 home defeat to Jamaica on Wednesday.
"[We] welcome the new head coach of the Honduran national team, the three-time World Cup coach from Colombia, Hernan Dario Gomez," the local football federation said on Twitter late Friday.
Honduras are currently last in the eight-team final round of qualifiers for the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) zone.
Gomez has been out of work since parting ways with Colombian top-flight side Independiente Medellin in September.
Gomez is one of only three manager to have led at least three different national teams to a FIFA World Cup, having achieved the feat with Colombia (1998), Ecuador (2002) and Panama (2018). Enditem
