Russia adds 36,446 COVID-19 cases, record number of deaths

The nationwide death toll grew by a new single-day record of 1,106 to 232,775.

MOSCOW, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Russia has registered 36,446 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 8,316,019, the official monitoring and response center said Tuesday.

The nationwide death toll grew by a new single-day record of 1,106 to 232,775, and the number of recoveries increased by 26,973 to 7,213,584.

Meanwhile, Moscow, Russia's worst-hit region, reported 6,074 new cases, taking its total to 1,780,781.

Anna Popova, head of Russia's consumer rights and human well-being watchdog Rospotrebnadzor, said Monday that three cases of the AY.4.2. Delta sub-variant had been detected in Moscow city and surrounding region.

According to official data, about 53.5 million Russian citizens had received at least one dose of a vaccine as of Friday and around 49 million of them had been fully vaccinated.
