NEW DELHI, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- At least nine persons, including four children, died and a few others were injured on Friday after a wall collapsed in India's southern state of Tamil Nadu, confirmed a state government official.

The mishap occurred in the Pernampattu area in Vellore district due to incessant rainfall over the past couple of days, said media reports.

State's Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed his grief over the incident and announced 500,000 Indian Rupees (6,720 U.S. dollars) ex gratia to the families of the nine people who lost their lives in the incident.

He also announced a financial aid of 50,000 Indian Rupees (672 U.S. dollars) for those who suffered injuries in the incident.

The state has been witnessing heavy rainfall since last week. The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall in the northern districts of Tamil Nadu on Friday as well.

Due to the prevailing inclement weather, schools remained closed in many districts in Tamil Nadu, including capital city Chennai and its nearby ones. Enditem
