A recent survey by the Pew Research Center showed rising disillusionment with the state of U.S. democracy, with 72 percent of Americans and 57 percent of interviewees worldwide viewing it as a poor example of a political system.

For a long time, the United States has been identifying itself as a "city upon a hill" and advocating American values such as "democracy, freedom and human rights."

However, its immigration policy seems to have nothing to do with these so-called "universal values."
