SHENYANG, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- The northeast China provinces of Heilongjiang, Liaoning and Jilin -- known as the country's "grain barn" -- recorded a bumper grain harvest, with the total grain output reaching 144.5 million tonnes this year, up more than 7.6 million tonnes year on year, according to data released Monday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

These provinces boast vast tracts of fertile farmland, and the grain output accounted for 21.2 percent of the national total, playing an important role in China's food security.

According to agricultural experts, abundant sunshine and rainfall this year in the region are conducive for agricultural production.

In Liaoning, for example, the average precipitation from April to September was more than 20 percent higher than the same period last year, providing sufficient moisture during the grain plantation season.

The popularization of agricultural services, such as leasing farming machines and substitute planting, has helped save labor and improve farming efficiency.

Besides, the provinces have pushed forward efforts on protecting its resource of black earth for sustainable development of agriculture.
