MADRID, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- Spanish La Liga high fliers Real Betis on Tuesday confirmed that Manuel Pellegrini has extended his contract as first team coach until the end of June 2025.

The 68-year-old Chilean joined Betis on a three-year contract in the summer of 2020 and led the Seville-based club to the sixth place in his first campaign, assuring qualification for the Europa League.

In this season, his side currently sit third in La Liga behind Real Madrid and Sevilla, and have again qualified for the knockout stages of that European tournament.

"I have been very happy this year and we want to continue along these lines as the club has some very interesting ideas for the future," said Pellegrini.

Betis president Angel Haro has commented a few days ago that he wanted to secure the future of the former Manchester City, Villarreal, Real Madrid and Malaga coach.

"It's not the best idea to have a coach in the last year of his contract. I would like to renew Pellegrini's deal before the end of the season," said Haro. Enditem
