Vietnam reports 16,555 new COVID-19 cases, 1,588,335 in total

HANOI, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam recorded 16,555 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, including 16,522 locally transmitted and 33 imported, according to the Ministry of Health.

Among the localities, the Vietnamese capital Hanoi logged the highest caseload with 1,646 cases, followed by the southern Ca Mau province with 1,193 cases, and the southern Ho Chi Minh City with 979 cases.

The new infections in the country brought the total tally to 1,588,335 with 30,251 deaths, said the ministry. Nationwide, a total of 1,173,484 COVID-19 patients have recovered from COVID-19, an increase of 13,394 from Tuesday.

More than 141 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, including 63.3 million second shots, have been administered in the Southeast Asian country, according to the ministry.

Vietnam has by far gone through four coronavirus waves of increasing scale, complication, and infectivity. As of Wednesday, it has registered over 1.58 million locally transmitted cases of COVID-19 since the start of the current wave in late April, the ministry said. Enditem
