TRIPOLI, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- A senior United Nations official on Thursday met with acting speaker of Libya's parliament Fouzi Al-Nuweiri here on holding broad consultations among relevant parties to bridge political divisions in the conflict-hit country.

"I reiterated the UN support for all Libyan-led efforts to overcome the persistent challenges facing the electoral process and mapping a path to free, fair and inclusive elections," said Stephanie Williams, U.N. special adviser on Libya.

In a meeting with Chairman of Libya's High National Elections Commission Emad al-Sayeh Wednesday, Williams also underlined her support for the commission "as an independent institution in charge of the electoral process."

Libya was expected to hold presidential elections on Dec. 24, 2021. However, the elections were postponed indefinitely due to technical and legal issues.

The oil-rich North African country has been in turmoil since the fall of late leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

The elections are part of a roadmap adopted by the UN-sponsored Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, with the aim of ensuring stability in Libya following years of political division and insecurity.
