ISLAMABAD, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Former Pakistani President Muhammad Rafiq Tarar died at the age of 92 in the country's eastern city of Lahore on Monday, his family confirmed.

Tarar served as the president of the country from January 1998 to June 2001 and he also served as judge of the Pakistani Supreme Court.

Tarar had been suffering health issues for a long time. Condolences poured in on social media following the news of his death, with the country's political leaders and general public expressing sorrow over his passing away.

Pakistani President Arif Alvi expressed grief over the passing away of the former leader and extended condolence to the bereaved family.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed sorrow over the loss of the former president and sent a condolence message to his family.
