GUANGZHOU, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The southern Chinese metropolis of Guangzhou registered 27 locally transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases and 11 local asymptomatic carriers from 2 p.m. Sunday to 6 p.m. Monday, the municipal government said in a press conference on Monday.

Since April 8, the city has registered a total of 61 local infections amid its latest outbreak, mainly in Baiyun District.

Most of the new local infections were detected through the screening of the city's key groups and people in areas under control, according to Chen Bin, deputy director of the municipal health commission.

Despite the virus resurgence, the city is striving to ensure that proper medical care is provided in the areas under control. Five hospitals and five community healthcare centers in the areas under control in Baiyun District have made 3,622 beds available for patients, Chen added.

Guangzhou has also tightened its virus control measures and encouraged its citizens not to leave the city unless necessary. Starting from Monday, people leaving the city have to show a negative nucleic acid test result from within the previous 48 hours.
