Nearly 10,000 spectators watched the local "Village Wrestling" event in Yuanping City, north China's Shanxi Province. Also known as "Naoyang Wrestling", the event originated in the Xinzhou region of Shanxi and its participants are not restricted by gender or age.
Wrestlers who achieve a six-match winning streak will be awarded the title of "Sheep Holder" with the prize of a live sheep.
The traditional event was named a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008, and the three areas of Yuanping City, Xinfu District and Dingxiang County were also named "Hometowns of Chinese Wrestling".■
