TRIPOLI, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- The speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives (parliament), Aguila Saleh, on Wednesday stressed the importance of holding the elections as scheduled in December this year.

Saleh made the remarks during a meeting with Javier Garcia-Larrache, the Spanish ambassador to Libya, in the eastern city of Gubba.

During the meeting, Saleh highlighted the need to hold the elections on time according to the will of the Libyan people and the keenness of the House to achieve the will of the people, said a parliament statement.

Saleh also urged all foreign forces and mercenaries to leave all Libyan soil, the statement said.

The Spanish ambassador expressed support for the upcoming elections and for the withdrawal of all foreign forces from Libya, noting that related United Nations and Security Council resolutions must be respected, the statement added.

In February, the UN-sponsored Libyan Political Dialogue Forum selected a new executive authority of a unity government and a presidency council, whose main task is to prepare for the national elections on Dec. 24. Enditem
