MOSCOW, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday called on members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to develop a unified and common position on Afghanistan.

Putin made the remarks when attending the 21st meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO and a joint summit of the leaders of the SCO and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) member states on Afghanistan via video link.

He noted that the events unfolding in Afghanistan have a direct impact on the security interests of SCO member states, and the bloc must focus on supporting an inclusive and peaceful settlement to the Afghan conflict.

Putin said both organizations should enhance cooperation to bolster Eurasian security as a whole.

"I am confident that the SCO and the CSTO have all the necessary resources and capabilities to take our mutually beneficial cooperation to a new level," Putin said.

"This is especially relevant given the situation in Afghanistan," he added. Enditem
