BERLIN, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- German environmental group Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) has filed lawsuits against BMW and Mercedes-Benz for refusing to tighten their carbon emissions targets, the non-governmental organization announced on Tuesday.

"With our lawsuits we will force BMW and Mercedes to a quick end of their climate killing city tanks and to end diesel and gasoline cars by 2030, by verdict," said Jurgen Resch, DUH's CEO.

The DUH had previously urged the two German carmakers to phase out combustion engines by 2030 but both Mercedes-Benz and BMW rejected to make any binding commitments on Monday.

In the plaints, the DUH demanded that BMW and Mercedes-Benz "transform their enterprises in a climate-friendly way by drastically reducing CO2 emissions of their vehicles in accordance with the binding regulations of the Paris climate agreement and the German law on climate protection."

The two German carmakers would be of "immense importance" in terms of CO2 emissions. According to the DUH, with 212 million tons of CO2 emissions in 2019, BMW and Mercedes-Benz accounted for more than a quarter of the country's total. Enditem
