ACCRA, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Ghana recorded an increase in its population to 30.8 million during the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC), said the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) Wednesday.

The new population figure represents an increase of 6.1 million people compared with the population of 24.7 million recorded in 2010, said the Government Statistician Samuel Kobina Annim.

"Overall, females make up 50.7 percent and males 49.3 percent of the total population with 8.3 million households and a national household size of 3.6 persons per household," said the government statistician.

Annim explained that there were 400,000 more females than males in the West African country, per the new figures, with a declining rate in national population growth and a national population density of 129 persons per square kilometer.

The census also recorded 10.6 million structures nationwide, 20 percent of which are metal containers and wooden kiosks.

"All indicators show that the census results are in line with expectations based on the benchmark values used to assess the coverage of the 2021 PHC," Annim said, adding that GSS would release details of the complete data over the next three months.

Ghana commenced the first fully digital census on June 27 and released the preliminary results 44 days after completing enumeration. Enditem
