LAGOS, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from weekend attacks on the villages in Nigeria's northern state of Kaduna rose to 40 as two more bodies were recovered on Monday, a state official said.

Samuel Aruwan, commissioner for internal security affairs in Kaduna, said in a statement that security agencies had gathered 40 bodies across three villages in the state's Giwa local government area, which were attacked by gunmen between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

"It would be recalled that Kauran Fawa, Marke and Riheya villages in the Giwa local government area were attacked by armed bandits, with 38 people confirmed dead as of yesterday (Sunday)," Aruwan said.

"The latest discovery of two more bodies brings the death toll from the attacks to 40," the commissioner added.

Armed attacks have been a primary security threat in Nigeria's northern and central regions, resulting in deaths and kidnappings. Enditem
