NEW DELHI, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- The regional party Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) in India's eastern state of Jharkhand is all set to form a new local government with the support of the Congress, officials said Tuesday.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had been reduced to an opposition.
According to election officials, the ruling alliance has won 47 seats in the 81-member constituency while BJP bagged only 25 seats.
An official said the three parties -- JMM, Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) are forming an alliance government in the state. The JMM bagged 30, Congress party got 16 seats and another regional party Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) won one seat.
Polling for the 81-member state assembly took place in five phases between Nov. 30 and Dec. 20. The votes counting was held on Monday.
Hemant Soren, the face of the opposition alliance and chief minister of Jharkhand between 2013 and 2014, is set to take over the top post for the second time.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Soren and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-led alliance for the victory in the Jharkhand polls.
Modi thanked the people of Jharkhand for having given BJP the opportunity to serve the state for many years.
BJP President and Federal Home Minister Amit Shah said the party respects the mandate given by the people of Jharkhand during the recently held elections.
This is the second key state the BJP has lost since the general elections in May.
Political analysts said the result is likely to embolden its opposition amid ongoing countrywide protests against the controversial new citizenship law.
