LAUSANNE, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Defending champion Sweden edged underdog Slovakia with a thrilling victory by penalty shootout in the opening day of ice hockey women's 6-Team at the Lausanne 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games here on Friday.
Slovakia shocked the title contender, who have never lost a YOG game in regulation time, as captain Barbora Kapicakova scored with barely a minute on the clock. Belkova Tereza extended the lead to 2-0 by a power-play goal two minutes later.
Klara Kentalla broke the ice for Sweden with 32 seconds left in the first period before Beatrice Hjalm tied it 2-2 from Ida Karlsson's assist on the power play.
Slovakia's goalkeeper Laura Medvidova made a series great save to push the champs all the way to penalty shootout, but Sweden's captain Nicole Hall scores twice including a sudden-death goal to complete the comeback.
Another match between Switzerland and the Czech Republic also went to a penalty shootout after a 0-0 in regulation time. Jade Surdez scored game winning goal for the host.
