Amokachi appointed Nigeria football ambassador

ABUJA, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday appointed Daniel Amokachi, a former Super Eagles player and assistant coach, as the country's football ambassador.

Although a largely ceremonial role, Amokachi's new position will see him assist the federal ministry of youth and sports development to scout for talent, be part of processes to revive the country's football development, as well as mentor young sportsmen and women, a presidency statement read.

Amokachi, a member of the 1994 Super Eagles team that won the African Nations Cup in Tunisia, was also in the Nigerian Olympic football team that won gold at the 1996 Olympic Games.

In addition to his footballing exploits in Europe, particularly in England where he won the FA Cup with Everton in 1995, since retiring Amokachi has managed Nigerian teams Nasarawa United and Enyimba FC.
