THE HAGUE, March 11 (Xinhua) -- PSV have appointed Roger Schmidt as head coach for the forthcoming two seasons, the Eindhoven based soccer club announced on Wednesday.
The 52-old German Schmidt starts his stint at PSV on July 1 this year and signed a contract until mid-2022. He will replace interim-trainer Ernest Faber, who took over after Mark van Bommel was fired in December last year. PSV are currently third in the Dutch Eredivisie and only have a mathematic chance of winning their first league title since 2018.
Schmidt previously worked for SC Paderborn, Red Bull Salzburg, Bayer Leverkusen and Beijing Guoan in China and is known for the attacking style of play of his teams. One assistant will join Roger Schmidt's coaching staff in Eindhoven, the 44-year-old Jorn Wolf who was his assistant with Bayer Leverkusen and Beijing Guoan.
"Ever since the first conversation, I got a really good feeling," Schmidt said in a press release. "I realized that we share the same long-term vision and the same mission. I have always been captivated by the charm of Dutch football and I am really looking forward to exploring a new environment. PSV fully support the style of play I have in mind. And I fully support PSV's wish to win silverware. My teams always go out to win the game."
PSV's director of football John de Jong added that Schmidt has always been the first choice of PSV. "We are delighted to announce that he is joining our club as head coach," De Jong said. Enditem
