WARSAW, March 12 (Xinhua) -- A 57-year-old woman died of COVID-19 in a hospital in Poznan in western Poland, a city official announced on Thursday. She is the first death of the coronavirus outbreak in the country.
The woman was admitted to the hospital with severe pneumonia. The hospital confirmed on Monday that she contracted COVID-19 and described her situation as serious.
The victim suffered from medical preconditions. Her husband and daughter also contracted the disease, but are recovering.
Polish authorities reported 16 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, bringing the total number to 51. Government measures included closing schools and other places of education, preschools and cultural institutions starting next Monday.
