TRIPOLI, March 15 (Xinhua) -- The east-based army of Libya on Sunday launched an attack on forces of the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) south of the capital Tripoli, killing two troops and injuring several others.
According to a GNA commander, the attack took place early Sunday morning and ended with the GNA troops repelling the attack and regaining sites lost earlier to the east-based army in southern Tripoli.
"We managed to repel the attack and the enemy has retreated," Husam Addin, field commander of the GNA forces, told Xinhua, adding the clashes lasted until Sunday afternoon.
The eastern army has been leading a military campaign since April 2019 in and around the capital Tripoli, attempting to take over the city and topple the UN-recognized GNA of Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj.
