YAOUNDE, March 17 (Xinhua) -- The 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which was initially scheduled to take place from April 4 to 25 in Cameroon, has been postponed due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, Confederation of African Football (CAF) said on Tuesday.

CAF's Acting General Secretary, Abdel Bah said in a statement, a CAF Medical inspection visit to Cameroon concluded that the competition could not go ahead as planned because travelling across the continent is "getting increasingly complicated and impossible" due to the restrictions put in place by different governments.

"Even though the situation is considered as being under control in Cameroon and as per the advice from the WHO, the crisis is not yet stabilized yet in Africa and it's very difficult to predict its evolution in the next few days," Bah added.

On Tuesday afternoon, Cameroon's Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi said, an evaluation meeting held in Yaounde concluded that the novel coronavirus presented "major risks and operational constraints" to the football championship and proposed to CAF to postpone it.

"CAF Administration will propose the potential new dates in due time depending on the improvement of the situation," Bah said.
