NEW DELHI, April 14 (Xinhua) -- India's federal ministry of railways Tuesday said all passenger train services will continue to remain suspended until May 3.

"In continuation of the measures taken in the wake of COVID-19 lockdown, it has been decided that all passenger train services on Indian Railways including premium trains, mail/express trains, passenger trains, suburban trains, Kolkata Metro Rail, Konkan Railway etc shall continue to remain cancelled till 3rd May 2020," a statement issued by the ministry said.

However, the ministry said goods trains would be allowed to ply.

"To ensure the essential supplies in various parts of the country, movement of goods and parcel trains will continue," the statement said.

The decision to suspend passenger trains further came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a nationwide lockdown until May 3.

Train service in the country was suspended on March 25 after Modi announced the first phase of nationwide lockdown.

The ministry said no booking of any type of tickets, including E-tickets, shall be done until further advice. However, the facility of online cancellation will remain functional for ticket bookings.

India's federal health ministry Tuesday morning said the death toll due to COVID-19 in India rose to 339 and the total number of confirmed cases in the country reached 10,363.
