RABAT, May 3 (Xinhua) -- A Turkish national was at Morocco's Mediterranean port of Nador for trying to smuggle 230 kg of cannabis on board a truck registered in the Netherlands, AL Oula TV reported Sunday.
The suspect, 43, was arrested on Saturday by the Moroccan police and customs services operating at the port, when the truck was preparing to embark toward the Spanish port of Almeria.
The police have opened a judicial investigation to shed light on this international criminal network.
Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis cultivation during the past decade, Morocco remains one of the world's largest producers of the narcotic plant, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. Enditem
