BANGKOK, May 8 (Xinhua) -- The total number of COVID-19 cases in Thailand reached 3,000 on Friday, with eight new confirmed cases being reported, up six from Thursday.

There were no reports of new COVID-19 death. Total number of deaths now tally at 55.

Thailand's Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) Spokesman Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin said the increase in the new discoveries was a result of intensive Active Case-Finding, especially in communities and at an immigration detention center in southern provinces.

"Out of all new cases, three were from the Yala Province where they mingled in a community with patients who were infected," said Taweesin. "Five others were migrants who mingled with those infected in an immigration detention center in Songkhla Province."

The CCSA said the government is ramping up its Active Case-Finding and aims to reach a total of 400,000 tests from the current level of around 230,000.

Taweesin said that some criteria for testing will be expanded to include flu-like symptoms without a fever or the loss of the sense of smell. Enditem
