Ximena Garzon, the minister of Public Health in Ecuador, said on Wednesday that the support of China is "extremely valuable" in the country's fight against COVID-19.

Ecuador, one of the countries that has been most affected by the pandemic in South America, has made progress in its vaccination plan among population aged over 16.

Vaccines from China, such as CoronaVac from Sinovac and Convidecia from CanSino (the latter utilizing one dose), have contributed to the country's vaccination plan kicked off in January 2021.

According to the minister, Ecuador has completely vaccinated 10 million people, while the vaccination for adolescents aged between 12 and 15 is going on.

Meanwhile, the minister declared that the vaccination for children aged between five and 11 will start on Oct. 15.

Ecuador aims to achieve collective immunity against COVID-19 by the end of this year, once 85 percent of the population are vaccinated.
