UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday welcomed an intra-Libyan agreement on the withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign forces, said his spokesman.

Guterres welcomed Friday's agreement reached by the Libyan 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC) in Geneva on a comprehensive action plan for the gradual, balanced and sequenced process of the withdrawal of mercenaries, foreign fighters and forces from Libyan territory, said Stephane Dujarric in a statement.

The action plan is a cornerstone in the implementation of the cease-fire agreement signed on Oct. 23, 2020 in Geneva, the statement said.

The secretary-general applauded the unity of purpose prevailing within the 5+5 JMC and called on all Libyan and international actors to work toward the implementation of this action plan.

The deployment of an initial team of UN cease-fire monitors will contribute to creating the conditions for a successful implementation of the action plan, according to the statement.

The secretary-general reiterated the firm commitment of the UN to support the Libyan people, it said. Enditem
