COLOMBO, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's cabinet of ministers has approved to amend existing laws to ban cattle slaughter in the country in what is seen as an effort to increase local agriculture and dairy production, local media reported here Wednesday.
According to government officials, the ban on cattle slaughter was originally approved by the government two months after it won the 2020 Parliamentary Election. In September last year, the cabinet approved the ban and a proposal to amend the laws and regulations applicable to it.
The cabinet has now approved to amend five acts including the Cattle Slaughter Ordinance before presenting the proposal in Parliament.
The Sri Lankan government last year pointed out that the livestock resource required for traditional farming purposes was insufficient due to the rise of cattle slaughter and that was an impediment to the local dairy industry.
Following the ban, Sri Lanka will now take steps to import beef into the country. Enditem
