MOGADISHU, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- Somali National Army (SNA) said its forces on early Tuesday captured al-Shabab base in Garbahrey district in the southern region.

The SNA military officials told the State-owned news agency, SONNA that the troops took over Tulo-Burwago village in Gedo region without fighting since the militants had already vacated before the troops stormed the region.

"The Al-Shabab militants had vacated and ran away from the village before the SNA forces stormed," the SNA commanders said.

The militants, which are fighting to overthrow the Somali government, have been using the base to launch unspecified attacks on the locals and allied forces in the region.

The army has vowed to intensify military operations to ensure that they flush out all al-Shabab remnants in the areas which are still under al-Shabab control.

The latest security operation comes as government forces have intensified operations against al-Shabab in the central and southern regions, but the militants are still in control of the rural areas of those regions, conducting ambushes and planting landmines. Enditem
