SINGAPORE, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Pew Research Center has recently pointed out in an analysis that democracy is in trouble, a Singaporean media reported recently.

According to English-language newspaper The Straits Times, Pew released an analysis on democracy based on surveys conducted between 2015 and 2021 and found that roughly two-thirds or more in countries like the United States, Spain, Italy, Belgium and Japan dissatisfied with the way democracy is working in their countries.

"A median of 56 percent across 17 advanced economies surveyed in 2021 say their political system needs major changes or needs to be completely reformed," Pew was quoted by the report as saying.

Democracy, as a system of governance, marked in its most basic form by equal rights, inclusivity, free elections and the checks and balances of independent institutions, is in trouble, The Straits Times said in the article released on Tuesday.

Pew's analysis showed that many citizens think democracy is not delivering in their countries, and political and social divisions are amplifying the challenges of contemporary democracy, said the article.
