NAIROBI, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's Judiciary plans to accelerate use of e-justice to enhance access to justice amid the COVID- 19 pandemic.
David Maraga, chief justice and president of the Supreme Court of Kenya, said that the practice directions on electronic case management regulations to guide the integration of ICT in judicial proceedings were put in place on March 20.
"These practice directions are now being used by courts across the country to facilitate use of technology in the delivery of justice. We have so far managed to deliver approximately 7,000 judgments during this period," Maraga said.
Maraga added that Kenya has decided to use all means possible to ensure that essential processes are able to run in the justice sector.
"The use of technology in dispensation of justice has since proved an invaluable channel through which we can carry out operations in the justice sector during this period of scaled-down court operations," the head of the judiciary said.
He noted that the NCAJ decided to scale down operations of the justice sector from mid-March.
"This was an important step that we took in order to curb the spread of the virus. Since then we have been constantly reviewing the situation and carrying out essential operations, while paying careful and due regard to the regulations and directions of the National Emergency Response Committee on novel coronavirus," he added.
