COLOMBO, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's cabinet has approved a 46.5 million U.S. dollar proposal to construct or repair over 14,000 houses in the island country as part of a national plan to enhance access to housing at the village level, local media reports said here Monday.
The proposal by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Ministry of Urban Development, Water Supply and Housing Facilities envisages providing one deserving family in each of the country's 14,022 local divisions with 3317 U.S. dollars to either rebuild a house or repair an existing one.
The program is the first phase of the government's "A house for every village, future to the country" program, which aims at providing every family in the country access to a comfortable home.
The program will be implemented nationwide this year by community committees that would include rural political leaders, state officers and civil organizations.
Providing housing facilities through multiple approaches is part of Sri Lanka's National Policy Framework unveiled earlier this month.
