Another key MP quits Thailand's Democrat Party

BANGKOK, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Another member of parliament (MP) of the Democrat Party Attawit Suwanpakdee on Thursday withdrew from the party to join former Democrat MP Korn Chatikavanij in forming a new political party.

Atthawit, who was actively involved in ousting the government of prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra five years ago, said on his Facebook page on Thursday that he wanted to see a new type politics in Thailand which could adapt to global changes and drive Thailand toward a new economic structure.

The 41-year-old MP said he was looking to invite people from all walks of life to the new party to drive the country forward and to change the face of Thailand.

Meanwhile, Korn who quit on Wednesday night said he wished to provide Thai people with a political alternative.

Former Democrat party leader and House Speaker Chuan Leekpai told the media on Thursday that he had tried his utmost to dissuade Democrat members from leaving the party, however he could not stop them if they really wanted to quit.

Before the resignations of Korn and Atthawit, two key Democrat party members, Warong Dechgitvigrom and Pirapan Salirathavibhaga also quit the party late last year.
