NEW DELHI, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- At least two militants and a paramilitary trooper were killed on Wednesday during a gunfight in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, according to the police.

The gunfight broke out at Lawaypora locality in the outskirts of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Militants today attacked a joint party of police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at Lawaypora," a senior police official posted in Srinagar said. "In the exchange of fire, two militants were killed. One CRPF man was also killed fighting these militants."

According to police, the militants travelling on a motorcycle were asked to stop at a barricade. However, they fired upon the government forces and triggered a gunfight.

Following the gunfight, senior officers along with additional contingents rushed to the spot to take on militants. The area was cordoned off and searches were underway.

Last week, three militants were killed and a policeman wounded after a goods truck they were travelling in was intercepted near the toll plaza in Nagrota in the outskirts of Jammu city, the region's winter capital.

A guerilla war is going on between the militants and Indian troopers stationed in the region since 1989. Kashmir, a Himalayan territory divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in its entirety. The two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
