NEW DELHI, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Two children were killed and two hospitalized after their parents took them to occultists in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place at Kadamtali village in Malda district, about 351 km north of Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal.

"Last night four children from Kadamtali village were taken ill, following which their families took them to occultists (locally called tantrics). The children who had spent the day playing inside a jungle complained of sickness, following which their families thought they have been overtaken by some evil spirit," a police official said.

"However after two hours the condition of the children worsened and one succumbed, the families brought the three children to Malda Medical College hospital, where another one succumbed."

The remaining two children are undergoing treatment inside the hospital, police said.

Police have registered a case and ordered an investigation to ascertain the cause of the death of two children.

Reports said the occultists have managed to flee from the village.

The preliminary investigation carried out by police suggest the children might have eaten some poisonous fruits in the jungle.
