NEW DELHI, March 19 (Xinhua) -- The four men convicted of raping and murdering a young student more than seven years ago in the infamous "Nirbhaya Rape Case" will be hanged on Friday inside a prison in the Indian capital, after the country's courts rejected petitions of the four on Thursday.

The four will be hanged at 05:30 a.m. on Friday morning local time, confirmed an official at the Delhi-based Tihar prison.

They were convicted of gang-rape and murder of a medical student, who was brutally assaulted in a moving bus in Delhi in December 2012.

The heinous case had jolted the country's civil society even, as it triggered strong protests from across the country with people demanding stringent laws to deal with crimes against women.

The four rapists were decided to be hanged on January 22, but their hangings were postponed a couple of times as the convicts' lawyers managed to take undue advantage of the country's existing legal system by moving mercy petitions at different forums, thereby succeeding in delaying the court's death warrants.

There were a total of six persons involved in the infamous gang rape. While one of them had committed suicide during the trial, the other juvenile was freed after he served a term at a Correction Home.
