COLOMBO, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan authorities on Monday said the country had unearthed the world's largest natural corundum crystal blue sapphire in Ratnapura, about 113 km away from the capital Colombo, local media reported.

Authorities said the stone weighed 310 kg and was blue and white in color. It was named "Queen of Asia" by experts in the gem industry, authorities said.

The gem is presently stored in a laboratory owned by the National Gem and Jewelry Authority after it was unearthed in the backyard of a private residence.

The owners of the sapphire, quoted by local media reports said the stone was high in value and could be more than 1.5 million carats. Enditem
