ATHENS, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- A 3.5-meter-high puppet named "Little Amal" representing refugee children sent from Athens a message for peace and aid to the displaced on Thursday.

The artwork, depicting a Syrian refugee girl, was welcomed by Athenians with a cultural event inspired by Greek mythology.

Amal, which means hope in Arabic, is on an 8,000 km journey to raise awareness for the plight of refugees.

It started from the Syria-Turkey border in July and reached Greece on Aug. 9. It's expected to continue the voyage to Italy and other European countries including Britain in three months.

The puppet's journey, named "The Walk", is part of an international arts festival which is joined by artists, cultural institutions and humanitarian organizations. Enditem
