BERLIN, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Germany would support developing countries in adapting to climate change with an additional 150 million euros (173.6 million U.S. dollars), the Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMU) and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) announced on Monday.
"People in the poorest countries must not be the losers of climate change," said German Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Gerd Mueller, in a statement. "After all, they have contributed the least to climate change and suffer the most from its consequences."
100 million euros from the BMZ would go to the Global Environment Facility (GEF) fund, an international scheme for financing environmental protection projects in developing countries. The remaining 50 million euros provided by the BMU would support the Adaptation Fund.
Overall, Germany currently contributed around 2 billion euros per year to international adaptation financing, which was around 40 percent of total climate financing from budgetary funds, according to the BMU.
"Germany is a reliable partner in financing measures to adapt to the consequences of climate change," said Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety Svenja Schulze in a statement.
